Heading Into Silking: Is Your Nitrogen on Track?
As Midwest corn enters tasseling and silking, its focus shifts from rapid leaf growth to ear and grain development. Nitrogen uptake peaks during late vegetative stages, fueling leaf expansion and photosynthesis, then slows as nutrients are redirected to reproduction. Adequate nitrogen before silking is critical, but fields with shortages or sandy, low-mineralization soils may benefit from timely supplemental applications to protect yield potential.
